Travelling Letters 2010
Letters in Art Tour
18 June - 5 September, 2010

This summer Lahti Art Museum presents the international exhibition Travelling Letters 2010. The exhibition deals with the world of script, design and art. The works of the exhibition describe how text, visual art and design are attached to each other; an image talks and texts are full of images and meanings.

Travelling Letters is a series of exhibitions that change place, size and contents. The first exhibition was organized in St. Petersburg, 2008, and after that in Vilna, 2009. The exhibition in Lahti Art Museum is the largest so far and considering its contents it is clearly highlighting art. Altogether 41 artists, calligraphers, designers and graphic designers from 11 countries are participating in Travelling Letters 2010. Artists have been free to choose from their own works pieces that suit the theme of the exhibition. Many of these works have been made especially for this exhibition. Designer and assoc. professor Ausra Lisauskiené from Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts together with artist Ritva Leinonen from Lahti and Lahti Art Museum are responsible for the whole of the contents of the exhibition.

Finnish artists participating the exhibition are Lauri Astala, Harri Kettunen, Sami Kortemäki, Ritva Leinonen, Marja-Liisa Mäki-Penttilä, Jaana Parkkila, Silja Rantanen, Kai Rentola, Jürgen Sanides, Pekka Syrjälä, Julia Sysmäläinen and Marjaana Virta.

The guests have also an opportunity to participate by interacting with the contents of a work via internet. The animated art work "Liza" by graphic designer Sami Kortemäki is made up of short texts projected on the wall. Anyone can write these texts using the web. The texts appear in the typeface "Liza" designed by Kortemäki. It is possible to follow how texts appear via the web camera on the wall and everything else that is going on at the same time around the exhibition room.
